One Access
The Charlotte public library has developed a new program called One Access. CMS students can use their students ID number and have access to many resources available with the public library. Go to:
www.cmlibrary.org
User name: your student ID #, password: last 4 of your ID
A few of the resources available are:
- Proquest- database of newspaper articles, magazines, books, video clips.
-Freegal/ Hoopla- Stream or download audiobooks, music, movies, and TV.
-Learning Express Library- interactive database with practice tests for ACT, SAT, AP exams.
-NoveList- Wondering what to read next? Check out the possibilities.
-Pronunciator-is a language learning service covering 80 languages offering a range of language skills.

Internet Searches – http://www.google.com, http://www.bing.com, http://www.yahoo.com, http://www.ask.com
Use a search engine – Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask, etc.
Use quotation marks around search terms to narrow your search results (i.e. “cell phones”)
Use a Boolean operator (and, or & not) to further narrow or limit your search results (i.e. “cell phones and driving”)
Use the Advanced Search techniques to limit searches to English and those updated within the previous year
Evaluate the site by asking:
- Who wrote or sponsors the site?
- What is the source of the online information?
- Is the information biased?
- What is the purpose of the site?
Use the address to determine the purpose:
.com – to promote or sell .edu – colleges & universities – check author (student vs. professor)
.gov – government website .org – nonprofit organizations – check objectivity
Record the date you access the site since electronic information changes and the date goes in the source citation

Log on at nclive.org and access thousands of articles and other materials. Users must have a public library card through a North Carolina-based library system.

Easybib is the automatic bibliography and citation maker for MLA format
Go to http://www.easybib.com/
Students need to register on the Easybib website on a school computer so the electronic note-taking component will save on the school computer and be accessible from a home computer
Students will be asked to provide an email address when they register
Students need to login to the Easybib website once they register
Use the Bibliography tab to create the Works Cited page
Use the Notes & Outline tab to Create a New Project to begin taking notes from a source
Use the Research tab to enter to your topic and search through millions of previously generated bibliographies; check to see if your sources are credible
Help & Tips
Avoid plagiarism by giving credit when you use the intellectual property of another person
Save work often (every 10-15 minutes) and keep a backup copy of your paper on your home directory, flash drive or other computer
Print only when necessary and only after conducting a Spell Check and Print Preview
Go to http://paperrater.com to have your paper analyzed for plagiarism, proofreading, spelling, and grammar mistakes
To open a USB or flash drive go to Start/Programs/Internal Drives/Internal Drive USB and select the file you want to open
To save to a USB or flash drive:
- In document go to File/Save As (or click disk icon on toolbar)
- In the File Name box type E: + enter
- Type name of the file
- If E: does not work, try F:
